Monday, October 9

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a great Fall Break and came back rested and ready to jump back in.

Today we reviewed how the periodic table is set up (groups and periods) and subatomic particles - specifically electrons.   Niels Bohr was introduced along with his hypothesis of what the atom looks like.  We discussed energy levels and how to determine how many energy levels an atom has.  We then practiced drawing Bohr Diagrams for different atoms.

Students will be quizzed over Bohr Diagrams this Thursday, October 12!

Monday, September 25

Today we talked about the Law of Conservation of Mass.  This was a vocabulary word so students had some background knowledge about it.  We found out the in a chemical change, atoms are not created or destroyed, simple rearranged.  We also found that in a chemical equation the reactants must equal the products.  We practiced satisfying the Law of Conservation of Mass.  That practice can be found on pages 39 & 41 in our composition book.

Thursday, September 14

Today was a hectic day back.  Students reviewed states of matter and what happen when thermal energy is decreased and increased.  Students drew images to show these changes in their composition book on page 32.  Students also did some quick notes about the atom and different subatomic particles.

I then gave students some time to review their vocabulary terms and work on their vocabulary menu option.  The quiz is still happening tomorrow and the vocabulary menu option is still due.  Please study or encourage your student to study.

If you need to look back at the specific words, they can be found in the Unit 2 Resources folder.

Friday, September 8

Today, students who did not finish yesterday's webquest were allowed to do so.  As students finished, they worked on their 1 vocabulary menu option OR their 4 homework choice activities.

We found out today that we will not be in school Monday and Tuesday because of Hurricane Irma.  Regardless, students will still take their scheduled quiz on Friday September 15!  If, of course, we are in school!  Also, students' 1 vocabulary menu option is due on September 15!

I hope everyone stays safe through the storm!

Wednesday, September 6

Wacky Wednesday turned out to be an exciting day in Physical Science.  We burned some paper, made a vinegar/baking soda eruption and investigated which would react with Alka Seltzer quickest: water or vinegar.  All this was done in an attempt to better understand physical and chemical properties AND physical and chemical changes.

Students participated in classroom demonstrations and discussion about these new topics.  Students also received several new vocabular words: boiling point, melting point, reactivity, combustibility, chemical property, physical change, chemical change and Law of Conservation of Matter.  Students also listed some examples of physical and chemical properties and changes in their composition books on page 30.

I look forward to students further discovering physical and chemical properties and changes! :)

Tuesday, September 5

Today was all about Mixtures and Substances.

Students pasted their Get WID it! sheets on page 28 and answered a Tell About It Tuesday by comparing and contrasting mixtures and substances.  Students then reviewed how matter is classified.

Students then investigated different objects to determine whether they were mixtures and substances.  Students then classified them even further into the type of mixture (heterogeneous or homogeneous) or substance (compound or element).

Teacher reviewed these with students and students pasted this activity on page 29 of their comp. books.

Friday, September 1

Today's Free Write Friday focused on the states of matter: solids, liquids, gases and plasma.  Students listened to Mr. Parr's States of Matter song and responded freely.  If you haven't already, you should check out what your students write on Free Write Friday.  These responses can get pretty interesting!

Students and teacher then spent some time discussing the states of matter and how matter can be classified.  Students came up with nine new definitions: solid, liquid, gas, atom, mixture, hetereogeneous mixture, homogeneous mixture, compound and element.

Students drew a flowchart in their composition book to show how matter can be classified.

Thursday, August 31

Today we reviewed volume and density.

Students participated in a demonstration of density and recognized that density of an object doesn't change because it is a physical property of the object.  This is why density can be used to identify objects, because it is a consistent property.

Students then followed along with the teacher to practice calculating density together.

Afterwards, students were given their own density challenge problems to complete all on their own.

Wednesday, 8/30

Students spent the day today exploring volume and density.  Most students finished the volume exploration from yesterday where they practiced reading the volume of a liquid, an irrergular object and calculate the volume of a cube.

If students finished the volume exploration, they moved on the a density exploration where they attempted to calculate the density of an object.  Students had to determine the mass and the volume of the object prior to calculating density.  Most students did not finish this exploration and will do so tomorrow with the teacher.

Tuesday, 8/29

Ideally we would have moved on today more than we did but...

Some students spent the day finishing their Unit 2 Pre-Test and writing their vocabulary terms in their composition books.

Some were able to move to the Volume Exploration where they practiced measuring matter using volume.  Students measured volume of a liquid, an irregular object and of a cube.

Those students who did not finish today's exploration will do so tomorrow.

Monday, 8/28

First off, I apologize for the skip in dates.  Apparently, I did not save the posts.  Ugh!

The first few minutes of class were spent cutting and pasting our Get WID it! sheets on page 21 in our composition books.

Today's More About It Monday asked:
How did you use scientific inquiry to solve your Candy Science problem from Friday?

The next ten minutes of class was spent finishing our Candy Science activity from Friday.

Today we began Unit 2 with our deconstructing our standard for Unit 2 and breaking down our learning targets.  Students participated in this by underlining and circling our targets on their introduction sheet (page 22 in comp. book).  This intro. sheet can also be found in the Unit 2 Resources Folder.

Students then took the Unit 2 Pre-Test.  Most students did not finish and will be given the opportunity to do so tomorrow.

Tuesday, 8/15

We had a busy day today!

We started by reviewing independent and dependent variables with a Sports Science video.

We then talked about scientific inquiry and data.

We jumped into collecting some of our own data by testing strength of spaghetti noodles.  Students had fun with this one as it did get a little messy! :)

Don't forget to work on Choice Activities and Vocabulary Menu Option.  VMO is due Thursday of this week and Choice Activities are due next Wednesday.

Monday, 8/14

Today's class was all about experiments and the parts of an experiment.

Students opened the day by pasting their Get WID it! sheets on page 15.

We defined five new terms: control, variable, independent variable, dependent variable, and mean(average)

Students worked through 4 creative experiments and had to identify the different parts.

This was stapled in to our comp. books on page 14.

Don't forget the vocabulary quiz and vocabulary menu option have been moved to Thursday, 8/17.

Friday, 8/11

Today in class we finished up The Case of the Missing Computer Chip and discussed our hypotheses.

Most classes moved on the talking about different types of observations and parts of an experiment.  Some classes, however, didn't quite get that far and will pick it up Monday.

Also - I have decided to move the Vocabulary Quiz to Thursday.  That means the VMO won't be due until then either.

Thursday, 8/10

We began today going over the procedure for entering vocabulary terms in the composition book.  Here it is:

Students should number words and skip lines.  Words should be underlined.

We do NOT do online or textbook definitions.  As we work our way through the unit, we will define our words with real-world, sensible definitions.  So, we will fill in the definitions as we go.

Unit 1 vocabulary should be entered on pages 12 and 13.

Remember, students should pick 1 vocabulary menu option to accompany their vocab. definitions.

After reviewing vocabulary procedures, we began our first investigation: The Case of the Missing Computer Chip.

Students were in teams of three or four and were tasked with investigating a crime scene to determine who stole the missing computer chip.  Students didn't get to finish today so we will continue our investigation tomorrow.

Wednesday, 8/9

We began class today visiting this website and blog.  Students were encouraged to visit the website if they are absent.  Students were also asked to share website information with their parents/guardians.

Students were asked to leave a comment on the blog.  Students can always leave comments/questions for Mrs. Wilson on the blog.  Students then took an online POP quiz over laboratory safety and tools.

We also began our first unit today!  Unit 1 - Introduction to Physical Science.  Students received their introduction sheet.  These were pasted onto page 10.  This sheet lists the learning targets, vocabulary, and important dates.  There is also a spot for students to log their Pre- and Post-test scores.

Check the resources folder for a copy of the Intro. sheet.

http://www.emanuel.k12.ga.us/admin/olc/folder.aspx?id=743&cid=382&s=510

Students then took the Unit 1 Pre-Test.  It was 35 questions.  This was done in the comp. book, page 11.

A note about pre-tests: on day 1 of EVERY unit, we will take a pre-test. These pre-tests help drive instruction.  They tell me what students already know, what we need to spend time on and what can be skimmed over.  Pre-tests also show us how much the student grows throughout the unit.  The student (and parent) can see what the student made on the pre-test and what they made on the post-test.  Ideally, the post-test score is much higher than the pre-test score.

Tuesday, 8/8

We spent the day today reviewing Laboratory Safety Rules and going over laboratory tools and their functions.

Students should remember that the number one priority in the science laboratory is safety!  Students should abstain from horseplaying and be respectful of the learning environment.  Laboratory activities are fun but are intended to extend learning and enhance a lesson!  Students need to keep this in mind.

Laboratory tools most commonly used in our class were reviewed.  Tool names, pictures and functions were pasted in comp. books.

Parents, take a look at your child's comp. book.  This is our primary resource for the class.  You'll be able to see what we've doing in class with a quick glance.

Students, study your comp. book entires for a couple of minutes each night.  That way you won't be gramming the night before the unit test.

Monday, 8/7

We had to play catch-up in class today as I was out last week.

We reviewed the 8th Grade Physical Science standards and pasted a copy in comp. books.

We went over Choice Activities and Vocabulary Menu Option requirements and pasted copies of each in comp. book.

Choice Activities:

Students are required to choose 4 activities to complete for every unit.  Students will have some in-class time to complete this but the majority of this assignment should be completed out-of-class.  These four activities count as 2 homework grades and are due on the day of the unit test.

Vocabulary Menu Option:

Students are required to complete 1 menu option in addition to definitions for vocabulary terms.  Vocabulary terms will be defined in composition book.  This will count as 1 classwork grade and is due on the day of the vocabulary quiz.

We ended the day by completing Science Buddies.  These are ready-made groups.  We pasted this sheet in the comp. book as well.
