Keyboarding – Mrs. Ashley

Course Syllabus

Using project-based instruction, students are introduced to the principles of business in the 21st century while learning keyboarding skills.  This course should also help students to use computers effectively in their lives, thus providing a connection of computer science and business careers.

The goal of this course is to provide middle school students with an introduction to the principles of computer science, basic keyboarding skills, Internet safety and usage, and computer applications.  Personal, professional, and ethical standards of behavior for the workplace will be examined and reinforced in the classroom.

Seating: You will be assigned a seat.  I use assigned seating for three reasons. 1) It helps me to learn your names. 2) It is easy for me to check the roll. 3) It is easy to pin point who did something to the computers.  Also, once you start your typing lessons, you will want to sit at the same computer each time.

Course Content: These are the things that you will be learning:

               Basic Computer

               Microsoft Word

               Internet Safety

Grading: Grading will be based on the following:

            Classwork: 40%

            Quizzes: 40%

            Unit Tests/Projects: 20%

Computer Use: Please note that school computers are to be used for academic purposes only and your computer activity will be monitored.  Failure to abide by this rule may result in the limiting or loss of your computer privileges.

Cell Phone Policy: You will NOT be allowed to use your cell phone in class for personal reasons considered inappropriate (i.e. texting, calling, checking social media sites, listening to music, or playing games) You will NOT be allowed to charge your phone in the wall receptacles or via computer ports.  You are expected to keep your cell phone in your pocket/purse.  Checking the time is NOT a “reason” to pull out your phone.

1st Offense: I keep phone until the end of class

2nd Offense: I keep phone locked in my desk until the end of the day

3rd Offense: Student will have his/her phone relinquished to the front office
