Native American Indians Unit

 

Inuit Indians

Location

  • They lived in the Arctic Region of North America in parts of Greenland, Canada, and Alaska.

Climate

  • The climate of the Arctic is very cold. Temperatures in winter can drop to     -60 degrees Fahrenheit. The land remains frozen all year.

Clothing

  • Their clothing was made from seal skins (waterproof), hides, and fur.

Housing

  • They made their homes from blocks of ice, known as igloos. In the summer they might make a tupik out of animal skin and bone.

Food

  • They fished and hunted for food.

 

Kwakiutl

Location

  • Pacific Northwest Coast Region of North America. Today we know the states to be Washington, Oregon, and Northern California.

Climate

  • Lots of rain, which keeps the land moist. Breezes are felt off the Pacific Ocean. Warm temperatures but cooler as you move east.

Clothing

  • Made from plant materials, hides, and fur.

Shelter

  • Houses were made from timber known as plank houses.

Food

  • They hunted, fished, and gathered roots and berries.

Nez Perce

Location

  • Plateau Region of North America. They lived between the Rocky and Cascade Mountain Ranges.

Climate

  • Hot dry summers to moderately cold winters with snow. The higher the elevation (up a mountain), the colder the temperatures. There was always a lot of rain.                  

Clothing

  • Made from plant materials, hides, and fur.

Shelter

  • Houses were earth materials and known as winter and summer houses.

Food

  • They hunted, fished, and gathered roots and berries. They followed the salmon in the spring.
